Mark Wertz, Boilermaker National Apprenticeship Program Coordinator
Boilermaker National Apprenticeship Program Coordinator Mark Wertz outlined training initiatives and recruitment strategies aimed at strengthening the workforce and reaching the next generation of Boilermakers.
Wertz said BNAP is upgrading its Learning Management System to the LMS 3, adding short training videos tailored to this generation’s apprentices. BNAP is working directly with locals to film demonstrations and share best practices.
“[Apprentices] want to see quick training videos,” Wertz said. “If anyone has an idea or is proud of what you do at your training center, hit me up and we’ll find a time to see you.”
With technology playing a greater role in the field, BNAP has also incorporated AutoCAD into its curriculum. “We’re implementing it into the program for the third or fourth year,” Wertz said.
BNAP not only trains and certifies members through EPRI Standard Task Evaluations, but also helps the organization develop new programs. Currently BNAP trains on five EPRI modules with a total of nearly 2,500 Standard Task Evaluations completed.
Every four years, the union undergoes an AP3 Compliance audit through EPRI to ensure training standards are met. To date, paperwork has been filed and the first review by the audit team is complete. The site evaluation will take place at L-237 in East Hartford, Connecticut.
Recruitment remains a key focus. BNAP has increased its presence at national conferences including the FFA conference, which draws 65,000 students, and a major event for high school counselors from across the country. Posters and materials were distributed to promote Boilermaker careers directly to counselors so when students seek career guidance, counselors have materials.
“The biggest thing we found there is they want us to come to their schools,” Wertz said. “A lot haven’t heard of the Boilermakers.”
